CHEMICAL PEELS TREATMENT

WHAT IS CHEMICAL PEEL?

A chemical peel is made up of various acids and is applied directly on the skin. These are one of the means which one might use to help improve skin with pigmentation removal, improve overall skin tone, facial scars, blackheads, pimple and skin texture.

HOW DO CHEMICAL PEELS WORK?

When used on the skin, chemical peels create a controlled injury. While we typically think of injuries as negative outcomes, in this instance they are not. The treatment takes advantage of the skin's ability to heal itself, and as a result of the skin renewal process can improve the appearance of skin with pigmentation and promote smoother skin.

TYPES OF CHEMICAL PEELS

Not all peeling chemical peels are alike, so you can expect a different experience depending on the strength of the acid and the depth of the peel. Deeper face peel typically give more pronounced results but may also be associated with increased risk and longer downtime. Here are the three major types.

Deep Chemical Peels

This is the most aggressive type of peeling chemical peel. These require more downtime and are usually reserved for those with extensive sun damage, wrinkles, and fine lines as it can penetrate to the lower layers of your skin.

BENEFITS

Chemical peels help improve your skin texture and tone, and decrease the visibility of fine lines and wrinkles. Meanwhile, if you have a medium chemical peel, your skin will likely appear markedly smoother, and a deep peel offers a dramatically different look and feel to your skin.

TCA CROSS

WHAT IS TCA CROSS?

TCA CROSS is short for the chemical reconstruction of skin scars (CROSS) using trichloroacetic acid (TCA). This is distinct from a full face peel as it is used only in targeted pores and scars.

The TCA CROSS procedure involves depositing small amounts of TCA at high concentrations (70–100%) onto the surface of the scars. This causes a local inflammatory reaction that leads to the formation of new collagen fibres. Over time, this improves the appearance of scars, making them less deep with reduced shadowing.

BEFORE THE PROCEDURE

Your doctor will clean your face, protect your hair, and cover your eyes with ointment, gauze, tape or goggles.

DURING THE PROCEDURE

Your doctor will use a brush, cotton ball, gauze or sponge to apply a chemical solution. The treated skin will begin to whiten. You might feel mild stinging while the chemical solution is on your skin.

AFTER THE PROCEDURE

After a chemical peel, your skin may be red, tight, irritated, or swollen. Apply any post-treatment balms as instructed as these are prescribed to aid in the healing process. It is also recommended to use sun protection and to avoid prolonged sun exposure as well as to avoid using any potentially harsh products on the skin for at least a few days.

WHAT IS TCA CROSS USED FOR?

TCA Cross is a treatment for improving acne scars. Trichloroacetic acid (TCA) is applied to individual scars in order to make them less shallow. TCA Cross Singapore works best for ice pick scars and boxcar scars. TCA face peel may work for other types of acne scars as well as for dilated pores.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN TCA CROSS AND CHEMICAL PEEL?

Compared to other acne scar treatments, TCA CROSS Singapore is associated with faster healing times, typically 5-7 days. TCA CROSS Singapore is not a fully peeling chemical face peel but a focal specialised technique. TCA CROSS Singapore has variable concentrations that can be used safely in all skin types.

FAQ

It is recommended to avoid any exfoliation or peels, harsh skincare products such as AHA, BHA, retinoids, whitening creams and vitamin C for the next 3-5 days.

Generally, make-up can be applied following chemical peels. However, subsequent removal should be done gently to prevent further irritation.

It is especially important to ensure that makeup is completely removed and not left on overnight.

Prolonged sun exposure is not recommended as your healing skin is more susceptible to UV damage and may disrupt its recovery.

If sun exposure is inevitable, a good sunscreen should be applied and reapplied every 2-4 hours.

Dry and flaking skin is a common and often expected side effect of chemical peels. This will naturally settle down as the treated skin falls off on its own.

There is no need to further exfoliate or to physically remove any peeling skin. However, a good moisturiser can help to mitigate the appearance of flaky skin until this fully resolves.
