Antibiotic Cream

Antibiotic creams are prescribed to minimise risk of infection post-procedure, or when it is indicated for mild skin infections.

Soothing Cream

A soothing cream may be prescribed following certain procedures to diminish inflammation and aid in the healing process. This contains a mild steroid and is intended for short-term use (1-7days). When used appropriately, such creams should not cause any serious side effects such as thinning of the skin or steroid withdrawal symptoms.

Retinoids

Retinoids are Vitamin A derivatives. Commonly available categories of topical retinoids, in increasing order of potency, are:  Retinol | Retinaldehyde | Retinoic Acid (prescription-only)

RETINOL AND RETINALDEHYDE CREAMS

Retinol and retinaldehyde creams are commonly available over the counter, whereas stronger formulations like retinoic acid require a doctor’s prescription. Retinoids work by regulating
skin cell turnover, reducing sebum production, and reducing bacteria-mediated immune response and inflammation.

COMMON SIDE EFFECTS

Common side effects include dry skin and mild irritation and transient purging of acne, and the adage of “start low, go slow” is a handy mantra to stick by when starting on these creams. It is also essential to use a good moisturiser and regular sun protection when using retinoids. As some topical retinoids may be affected by exposure to UV rays, these are also generally applied at night-time.

HYDROQUINONE

Hydroquinone (key component in Triluma) is a depigmenting agent that interrupts the formation and synthesis of melanin to help even and lighten the skin.

Prolonged use of hydroquinone may, rarely, cause a gradual blue-black darkening of your skin. It is therefore not intended for long-term use and should be stopped after the desired lightening effect has
been achieved.

CYSTEAMINE

Cysteamine (sold as Cyspera) is a derivative of cysteine, a naturally-occuring amino acid. Cysteamine reduces melanin production and is a skin-lightening agent used in the treatment of hyperpigmentation disorders. It also confers additional anti oxidative benefits.

Used regularly, a reduction in pigmentation can be visible after 6 weeks, with optimal results after around 8 to 12 weeks. Cysteamine cream is safe for long-term use and should be continued indefinitely to maintain its effect.
